SIGNS AND ARCHITECTURE
The very word sign often suggests a separately-constructed form placed on, near or adjacent to a larger structure such as a building or kiosk.
Relating signs to structures
Signs and symbols sometimes bear little relationship to the general design of a larger structure. However, there are many signs, both old and new, which are very handsomely related to the architecture concerned. In such instances the designers have taken into consideration the lines of the building, the construction material used and the individual character of the structure.
Enhancing architecture
Design in abstract or natural form and lettering on the building can be placed there to explain significance, as well as to enhance. In many contemporary situations, prohibitive ordinances and the spatial restrictions of highways, streets and buildings have forced designers to use great ingenuity in signage. Together with architects, they can construct special structures or three-dimensional signage to bear direct relationship to an area or building, thus enhancing it.
Signage at special events
Temporary structures such as exhibitions may be desirable. These present companies with a very visible opportunity to display their signs and brands at special events. Where was branding on the streets of Sydney when the Pope came to town?
