Using 3D letters on illuminated lightboxes

3D letters on illuminated and fluorescent lightboxes stand out and provide impact when used in signage – which is why choosing the right lighting source is essential.

Product application

Illuminated 3D lettering and 3D letters in lightboxes are used to create signage for various interior and exterior applications. 3D lettering is used on signage on the exterior of buildings, shopping malls and various business establishments and in interior spaces to clearly mark entrances, exits, stairways, elevators and off-limit areas in a range of commercial, industrial and institutional environments. This signage can be appended to walls, ceilings and can be end-mounted.

Product description

The term ‘3D lettering’ applies to stand-alone, built-up or raised shapes, symbols, logos, alphabetic or numeric characters that are, as their name suggests, three-dimensional. Products are generally made from a wide range of materials including stainless steel, aluminium, brass, acrylic, perspex, vinyl or polystyrene. The lettering incorporates different fonts, typefaces, sizes and colours and at its most functional level can be illuminated or enclosed in light boxes for added effect. In the signage industry, when 3D letters are lit they are referred to as channel letters. Channel letters are illuminated with various light sources that include neon, incandescent, fluorescent and LED lighting.

Product specifications

Lightboxes can be slimline or the standard 150mm wide. The boxes can be single or double-sided with panes that are custom-coloured to suit specific requirements. Lighting is fitted into the box and wired with lighting ballasts and the letters can be individually lit or back-lit to create a halo type of effect. 3D fabricated letters can also be placed on the face of a light box to highlight the letters.

Lighting options

When deciding on an illumination source, the following issues must be taken into consideration:

- The environment in which the sign will be displayed,
- The temperature of the space,
- The desired colour of the lighting,
- The power supply options,
- The face and backing materials of the lightbox,
- The energy-saving qualities of the lighting,
- The ease of installation of the system,
- Durability,
- Maintenance,
- Warranties,
- Zoning and permit regulations, and
- Costs and budgets.
